  • Choosing an Assisted Living Community – Free Checklist

Choosing an Assisted Living Community – Free Checklist

Choosing an assisted living community is daunting

Moving an older adult or family member to assisted living is a big challenge for many families.

Deciding when it’s the right time for assisted living is tough, but once that decision has been made, the next question is how to find an assisted living community that’s the right fit.

Some important considerations are that they will be well cared for and that the community is a good fit for their lifestyle and personality. Where the community is located may also be an important factor as many people prefer to be close to friends and family.

Generally, that means looking at your older adult’s budget, visiting a few places, and comparing the pros and cons to make a final decision.

A Checklist to help you choose a good assisted living community

To make the process easier, we found a useful free guide that summarizes key information and has a handy checklist. This guide and checklist help you organize your thoughts, notice important details, and compare one community against another.

Argentum (formerly ALFA), a non-profit group for senior living communities, has a free guide and checklist that answers top questions about how to choose an assisted living facility.

The checklist helps you evaluate each community and puts the most important questions at your fingertips. We recommend reviewing the entire guide, but you could also go straight to the checklist in the last section.

    What’s in the guide:

    • Pages 1 to 3 – introduction
    • Page 4 – what are assisted living communities, benefits, pricing
    • Page 5 – amenities, services, types of care available, payment options
    • Page 6 – who oversees quality, state regulation inspection reports, how to find a community
    • Pages 7 to 11 – community review checklist

How to use the assisted living review checklist

The checklist goes beyond the usual questions about assisted living services. It digs deeper and helps you think about those “little things” that can be easy to miss as a casual visitor.

These are the important details that give you an idea of what life is really like there and how good the care really is.

Some of the more important questions we identified are:

    • Are you able to talk with residents about how they like the community and staff?
    • Are visits with the resident welcome at any time?
    • Is staff available to provide 24-hour assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) if needed?
    • Does the community conduct criminal background checks on employees?
    • Does the community train staff on elder abuse and neglect? Is there a policy for reporting suspected abuse?
    • What are the most common reasons why a resident may be asked to move out of the community?

No need to go it alone…there is help!

While this guide is extremely helpful in identifying questions to ask and things to consider, it should not be a reason to navigate this process alone. Senior Living Options of the Desert is a free service for families trying to find the right assisted living community. They are the local, trusted experts in assisted living placement and referral services. And, they have been helping families in our community since 2004.

The Family Advisors at Senior Living Options of the Desert already know a lot of the answers to the questions on the checklist and can be your advocate while you are visiting and evaluating different communities. They know the right questions to ask and will ensure that you are making an informed decision

    Next Steps

After you give Senior Living Options of the Desert a call, go ahead and download or print the ALFA Guide to Choosing an Assisted Living Facility (pdf). Be informed before you start your search.

  • What is a Senior Care Advisor?

What is a Senior Care Advisor?

Accepting that it’s time for an aging parent or family member to sell their home and move in to an assisted living or memory care facility can be overwhelmingly tough. Unfortunately, it’s a scenario that many of us adult children are facing as our parents age. We often delay talking about the subject because the idea of moving can be so emotionally difficult and we don’t know how to even begin the search for a care community that would be a good fit.

This is where a senior care advisor can help.
Senior care advisors like the ones at Senior Living Options of the Desert provide support and guidance to people looking for senior care options for themselves or their loved ones. This includes educating families on the different types of care options and local providers who might be a good fit.

Why Work With a Senior Care Advisor?

An experienced senior care advisor can save you lots of time and money trying to weed through all the options. First of all, their services are free! Senior Care Advisors help families narrow their focus to the right level of care and the communities or facilities that meet the individual’s personal criteria.

Another advantage of working with a senior care advisor is being able to access their first-hand knowledge of the local senior care market. A good local care advisor knows which care communities or facilities receive high marks from residents, their families, and state surveyors. And, probably more importantly, which communities don’t!

The Care Advisors at Senior Living Options of the Desert live and work in the Coachella Valley and have been providing services to families since 2004. They are the local trusted senior care experts!

Questions to Ask a Senior Care Advisor

Here are some important questions to ask a Senior Care Advisor during your initial phone call.

      • How do you help us find a community that is a good fit for our needs?
      • How do you help us determine what type of care is needed?
      • How much experience and what kind of training do you have as a care advisor in the senior care industry?
      • How many families are you currently working with?
      • How many families have you helped find a senior living community?
      • How long does it typically take for a family to find a community?
      • Do you set up the appointments and tours for us? Will you go with us to make sure we’re asking the right questions?
      • Will you be able to tell us what the different communities cost?
      • How many communities do you typically recommend we visit?
      • Are you aware of any financial resources that might help pay for care?
      • Do we need to sign a contract with you?
      • How much do you charge for your advice and guidance?
      • Do you have contact information for senior-friendly realtors and moving companies?

  • 9 Ways To Honor Our Veterans

9 Ways To Honor Our Veterans

Honor Those Who Have Served our Country This Veterans Day

Few groups deserve recognition, respect and gratitude more than the brave women and men who have served in the U.S. military. These outstanding individuals sacrificed so much so that we can preserve our way of life.

On Veterans Day, this November 11th, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to those who have served so selflessly and courageously.

At Senior Living Options of the Desert, we’re proud to have helped many veterans and their families find independent living, assisted living and memory care communities in Southern California.

9 Ways to Honor Our Veterans

No matter where you live or how much time you have, there are a number of ways you can honor a veteran who has spent his or her life protecting our values and our democracy. Here are 9 ideas that  you can consider!

    1. Say “thank you!” If you personally know a veteran, whether they live close by, or states away, make an effort to simply say “thanks!”  If your schedule is too hectic for a visit, a quick phone call or text is sure to be appreciated.
    2. Write an old-fashioned letter or send a care package. Looking for something a little more personal than a text or email? Send a veteran a handwritten letter or care package with a small gift and some of their favorite snacks. This is an especially considerate option because vets can treasure your letter or gift for years to come!
    3. Treat a vet to lunch, dinner or a cup of coffee. Inviting a veteran to a popular local restaurant or cozy coffeehouse is guaranteed to make their day. Prepare a few questions to ask about their time in the military. Being the center of attention for an hour or so will be an even better treat than the meal!
    4. Offer to help with household chores. This small act of gratitude speaks volumes. Even if you only have half an hour to spare, offer to help a vet with household tasks such as vacuuming, dusting or mowing the yard.
    5. Make a commitment to volunteer.  Finding meaningful volunteer opportunities is easy with the use of the internet.  Search the Veterans & Military Families category on www.VolunteerMatch.com to find a hospital, charity or other organization that needs help near you!
    6. Donate to a cause that supports veterans.  Consider making a donation to groups such as the Wounded Warrior Project or USO, and encourage your friends and family members to do the same.
    7. Invite a veteran to speak at your child’s school. Many children don’t fully understand the sacrifices veterans have made to protect us and our freedoms, but you can do something to change that!  Ask your child’s principal if they accept visiting speakers. If they do, invite a veteran to talk about their experiences or host a Q&A session at your child’s school.
    8. Support veteran-owned companies.  It is estimated that there are nearly 2.5 million veteran-owned businesses in the United States – that’s nearly 10 percent of all businesses nationwide. Find a veteran-owned company near you and pay them a visit today!
    9. Attend your local Veterans Day parade. Bring the whole family to your city’s Veterans Day parade and show your support in person!  The Palm Springs Veterans Day Parade starts at 3:30 pm on Monday, November 11th.

Whether you have five minutes or five hours to spare, you can make a huge difference in a veteran’s life this November 11th.  We hope this has given you some ideas to consider.

  • Assisted Living – Frequently Asked Questions

Assisted Living – Frequently Asked Questions

Being in the business I’m in I often get a lot of questions about the various aspects of assisted living. This is a topic that many people don’t think about until it’s time to think about it. So, it is understandable that there would be a lot of questions. I decided to put together a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) article to help address some of the inquiries I receive most often about Assisted Living.

    1. What are the criteria for assisted living?

People entering assisted living communities often need help or assistance with certain activities of daily living (ADLs) such as personal care, hygiene assistance, mobility, meal preparation, medication management and more. Assisted living may not be appropriate for people who:

    • Have severe cognitive impairment
    • Show behavioral symptoms such as wandering
    • Have extensive medical needs
    • Require daily nursing services

However, there are some assisted living communities that specialize in memory care that can assist a loved one who has some varying degrees of cognitive impairment.

    The admissions process includes:

    • Community Admissions Paperwork
    • Physicians Report (Form 602)
    • Negative Tuberculosis (TB) Test or Chest X-Ray

    2. What does assisted living cost include?

Assisted living is independent living in an apartment with the added benefit of having help nearby for medication management, meal preparation, housekeeping and transportation. Residents enjoy social connections, wellness programs, secure housing and cultural outings in an assisted living community. Costs associated with assisted living include the housing, utilities, and care services.

Many assisted living communities offer residents an all-inclusive pricing model while others offer fee-for-service pricing.

The all-inclusive pricing means that a single monthly fee covers rent, meals, housekeeping, transportation, and care.

The fee-for-service pricing model means that a resident only pays for the services they use, in addition to the monthly rent.

A Family Advisor at Senior Living Options of the Desert can provide more information on which pricing model is available at the different communities in the desert and throughout southern California.

In 2019, the projected, average monthly cost of assisted living nationwide is $4,000. Alzheimer’s and dementia care in assisted living (called Memory Care) costs, on average, an additional $800 – 1,200 per month, for a monthly total of $4,800 – $5,200. Costs for assisted living vary dramatically from state to state. In the South and Mid-West, the approximate average monthly costs are from $2,800 – $4,500. In the Northeast and on the West Coast, $4,200 – $6,050 per month is the norm.

    3. How does one pay for assisted living?

There are several options to help you pay for assisted living care. You may be able to navigate some of these options yourself. Some senior living communities offer a “financial concierge service” that may be able to help guide you through the process of qualifying for financial benefits. Another option is to speak with a “geriatric planner”. They can save you a lot of time and have a wealth of knowledge in this area. However, if you cannot afford or cannot find a geriatric planner, with a little determination and perseverance you can achieve the same results.

Check out a previous article I wrote for more detailed information on How To Pay For Assisted Living.

    4. Can I bring my dog too?

Senior living communities have different pet policies with specific breed restrictions and weight limits, so it’s important to do your research. For example, some communities have “pet interviews” to determine whether the pet is right for their community, while others allow all pets under 20 lbs.  Cats, birds and fish are also welcome in many communities, and some communities even have Pet Coordinators to care for any feathered or furry friends. So make sure to contact your communities of choice and ask about their particular pet policy.

My team at Senior Living Options of the Desert can answer this question for specific assisted living facilities in the southern California market.

    5. Are there assisted living facilities that are culturally diverse?

An increasing number of assisted living communities are designed to meet the unique cultural, dietary, lingual and religious-based needs of local populations. On the West Coast, there are many Asian senior living communities such as Fremont Hills in Fremont, CA and more are on the way.

As America ages and diversifies, we’ve also seen an ever increasing demand for niche retirement communities, including golf-oriented communities, LGBT oriented communities and communities with themes no one has even thought of yet.

    In Summary

I realize that this doesn’t begin to answer all the specific questions you will have regarding assisted living. So, please feel free to call us anytime to talk with one of our Family Advisors. We would love to answer any specific questions you have. Every situation is unique and we strive to help you make the most informed decision possible for you and your loved one.

  • Assisted Living vs. Nursing Homes

    Assisted Living vs. Nursing Homes

As time marches on, many seniors begin to experience physical and neurological health problems that can make it a lot harder, and less safe, to live on their own. When that happens, seniors and their families generally start to consider assisted living.

You’ve probably heard the term “assisted living,” as well as the term “nursing home.”   But, what’s the difference between the two?  And, which one should you consider when your loved one needs help?

According to the Centers For Disease Control (CDC), there are around twice as many assisted living facilities as nursing homes in the United States. Many seniors may need assisted living at some point in their life but many never need to make the transition to a nursing home. Let’s take a look at the difference between the two.

    Assisted Living Facilities

Assisted living provides assistance for people who may need some help with activities of daily living (ADL’s).  They’re often set up so that couples can move in together. Residents can get help with things like laundry, meal preparation, household cleaning, and personal care, depending on which services they actually need.

Housing is usually set up like an apartment or a condo, with a good degree of privacy that feels like regular apartment living. Staff are available to provide assistance when necessary.

Assisted living facilities also organize outings and other activities to keep residents occupied and entertained. Scheduled outings for things like shopping are typical, and in some facilities, residents may be able to have their own car if they’re licensed and capable of driving.

older senior couple talking to woman

    Nursing Homes

A nursing home is a facility that provides around the clock care from skilled medical professionals, like nurses and medical assistants. They cater to residents who need a lot of assistance with self-care, and who have more intensive medical needs.

Many nursing homes also offer rehabilitative services to help people transition from a prolonged hospital stay, before going home. These tend to be relatively long, but ultimately temporary stays. A person might stay at a nursing home in this context if they’ve had a stroke, or sustained an injury like a broken hip.

There are also nursing homes that specialize in memory care for patients with Alzheimer’s, Lewy body dementia, and other neurodegenerative diseases that cause a long term decline in cognitive and memory functions.

Nursing homes are more likely to be covered by Medicare and Medicaid due to the fact that they provide skilled nursing care. General assisted living is usually classified by government programs as “custodial care,” and you’ll often have to pay out of pocket, or purchase long term care insurance at some point to help you cover the cost when you need it.

Choosing the Right Kind of Living Arrangement

For most seniors with health problems, or who need help with some ADL’s like bathing, dressing and doing laundry, a regular assisted living facility can provide the right level of assistance from staff, along with the degree of independence that active seniors want to have.

Nursing homes are ideal for people with more serious health issues, who need daily medical care beyond basic things like medication management and transportation to doctor’s appointments.

  • How Do You Know When It’s Time For Assisted Living?

How Do You Know When It’s Time For Assisted Living?

If you’re a caregiver, you most likely wonder if there are certain signs or signals that might indicate when the time is right to consider assisted living for your loved one.  If you are starting to think about it, you are more than likeley feeling the challenge of balancing everything that is going on in your life and are starting to feel overwhelmed.  It might be time to consider some assistance.  But, how do you know when it’s time for assisted living?

    Let’s First Address EmotionsCaregiver Stress

Families often experience a lot of guilt and anxiety at the very thought of considering placing their loved in in an assisted living facility.  Many have even promised their loved ones years ago that they would never place them in a “home”.  And, many people feel that it is their duty to care for their loved one at home.  I’m sure you’ve heard people say, “Mom took care of me, now it’s my turn to take care of her.”

Then, there are those who have had a bad experience (or have heard of someone who had a bad experience) with a facility and are afraid of making that decision.  The most common fear or concern is that their loved one will not be cared for as well as they are at home or that placement in a facility will cause them to decline faster.  Quality of life is a huge factor for most families when considering assisted living.

Many Times It’s Out Of Your Control

Occasionally, the decision to place someone in a facility is out of your control.  There may be sudden situations when it’s clear that the time has come for assisted care. These can include:

    • Severe illness
    • Injury
    • Hospitalization/death of the caregiver
    • Hospitalization of the person who needs care
    • Dementia

These abrupt changes often necessitate immediate placement in a facility. Sometimes, a loved one may end up in a facility almost overnight, with little time to research options.  I get calls all the time from families who have experienced one of these events and have to find a facility immediately.

When Do You Know It’s Actually Time?Senior Living Options of the Desert

Outside of the above sudden situations when it’s out of your control, how do you know when you should consider looking in to assisted living for your loved one?

    The 13 Signs To Consider:

    1. You’ve injured yourself (such as hurting your back or falling) when trying to lift or move your loved one.
    2. If your loved one has Alzheimer’s and it has progressed to the point where they try to hurt you.  Or, they exhibit other challenging behaviors such as paranoia or anger.
    3. Your family member has wandered off outside the home and/or has become lost.
    4. You are falling short of your other responsibilities.
    5. You exhibit signs of caregiver burnout.  For example, you recently lost your temper when your loved one was resisting getting dressed.  Or, they were following you everywhere you went inside the house.
    6. Your own health is declining.  This can be either physical or emitional and may include conditions such as high blood pressure, headaches, stomach problems, anxiety, and depression.
    7. Your relationships are significantly suffering.
    8. You have surgery or another planned medical procedure coming up.
    9. Your doctor has said that it’s time for assisted living for your loved one.
    10. Your loved one has care needs that you really can’t handle well, despite your best efforts.
    11. Friends or other family members have expressed concern for you and have encouraged you to look in to other care options for your loved one.
    12. You have tried other in-home care resources but they just aren’t providing enough assistance for you.
    13. When you determine that assisted living is more cost-effective than what you are paying for in-home care assistance.

If one or more of these signs sounds familiar, it may be time to look in to a move to an assisted care facility.  You can talk with people you know who might be able to recommend a facility in your area.  Or, you can utilize a free assisted living placement service like Senior Living Options of the Desert who can guide you through the process.    They can save you hours and hours of time researching the best options for you.

A Word From Senior Living Options of the Desert

Thinking about care options for your loved one can be stressful. Although sometimes it feels like you can manage it, there may be other times where you feel like you’re just not able to do it all.

Many people describe the feeling as if they are drowning in the responsibility and the weight of the caregiver role.  Acknowledging these feelings, however, does not take anything away from the love you have for the person you are caring for.

Your health and well-being are important in being able to care for your loved one.  Acknowledging that you can’t do everything is ok.  Planning ahead will help you to be there for your loved one and allow you to continue to provide the support they need during the challenges of this journey.

Finding The Right Care in the Coachella Valley

In case you missed it, Leann Dale of Senior Living Options of the Desert was recently interviewed by Karen Devine of News Channel 3.  Here in the Coachella Valley there are several agencies that help senior citizens navigate all the information on local skilled nursing facilities, assisted living homes and board and care.  The leading agency is Senior Living Options of the Desert.

Karen Devine from News Channel 3 spoke with Leann Dale, owner of Senior Living Options of the Desert on what to look for when looking for a senior care option.

“You need to be sure you have someone who can help you out,” says Dale.

    Leann Knows Senior Care

Leann Dale, has spent more than a decade doing her homework on local facilities and even though she says there are some really good ones in the valley she’s not surprised about the amount of negative feedback.

As a family advisor, Dale emphasizes how important it is for her elder clients to have an advocate and to do their research before a crisis happens.

“Most of us don’t expect to ever be there, honestly it is one of those things where I guess in the back of your mind you figure you’re gonna get old and probably gonna need some help at some point, but that’s a long way out. Well before you know it, a crisis happens, somebody falls and breaks a hip or some dementia or Alzheimers starts to appear.”

    Call An Advocate

If you are looking for senior care options in Southern California, including Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley, call Leann at Senior Living Options of the Desert.  She and her team have been helping families find the right senior care options since 2004.
